Emily Wonder, Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Intern

Emily Wonder is an Occupational Therapy Doctoral Student Intern who sees clients at the Chicago-Lakeview, Lombard and Yorkville locations.

Hi, my name is Emily, and I am excited to be spending the next several months at Bricolage Wellness. I am an occupational therapy (OT) student graduating in May of 2021. While at Bricolage, I look forward to creating OT programming, completing a research project, and working with clients in individual and group sessions.

Occupational therapists help people participate in the tasks (occupations) they need and want to do each day. “Occupations” can be defined as anything that occupies our time—from the more basic tasks such as eating and sleeping, to engaging in our hobbies, going to work, and spending time with the people we care about.

Participating in daily occupations helps us connect with ourselves, connect with others, and establish meaning in our lives. I chose to pursue OT because I believe that every person deserves to participate in the tasks they need and want to do each day to create a meaningful life.

There comes a point in life where each of us experiences a disruption in our routines, in our connections with others, in our ability to do the things that are important to us. That disruption may be an injury, a diagnosis, trauma, not having access to the resources we need, stigma...the list continues. While working with you, I will help you cultivate the tools and environments you need to feel capable in the everyday activities that are important to you.

Mental health challenges can affect every area of our lives, and it can seem that our struggles become our identity. I believe that one of the most important parts of healing involves reconnecting with the life roles that we value and that build our sense of who we are—roles such as friend, musician, sister, writer, student, wife, artist. You are so much more than a diagnosis.

I will be seeing clients (adolescents and adults) at all Bricolage locations, primarily working with individuals with eating disorders. I would be honored to work with you and, as is a part of Bricolage’s mission, to “offer you the space to explore your story and rewrite it in a way that matters to you.”
